Reporting an Accident

Reporting an Accident

Maryland averages over 100,000 auto crashes per year. Some crashes are minor fender benders. Others are more severe, even deadly. It’s important to report the accident to your insurance company. Here are the guidelines that you should follow when reporting an accident that will protect you and those involved.

What should I do after having an accident?

The first thing that you should do after having an accident is to take care of anyone that is seriously injured. Once you have made sure that everyone is safe, call 911 to get a police officer to the scene of the accident. If you or someone involved in the accident is seriously injured, be sure to request an ambulance and avoid moving the injured party.

Should I take photos?

It’s wise to take photos of the accident scene and the vehicles involved. This helps the insurance company make a preliminary assessment of your vehicle’s damage. It will also jump-start the processing of your claim and repairs. Photos will support your claims in the event that the other driver disputes your report to the insurance company.

What if I’m at fault?

Never admit that you were the cause of the accident. The police and the insurance adjuster will investigate the scene of the accident and determine who was at fault. If necessary, you will be able to obtain a copy of the police report for your records.

Be sure to get the following information from the other driver(s):

  • Name
  • Address
  • Phone number
  • License Plate number
  • Driver’s License Number
  • VIN number (Vehicle Identification Number)
  • Make and model of all involved vehicles
  • Insurance information

You should share your information as well. The police officer on the scene will record this information and it will be included in the accident report.

Finally, contact your Maryland Auto Insurance claims adjuster to report the accident once you and your passengers are safe. The adjuster will evaluate your situation and assist you in finding a Maryland Auto Insurance Collision Damage Assessment Center to assess your vehicle’s damage and get a repair quote.
