You’ve been approved for a MAIF policy. You got the quote. Now there’s a policy document in front of you, and it’s full of language that reads like it was written by lawyers for lawyers.
You don’t need to read every word, but you do need to understand four sections before you sign. If you skip them, you could be surprised later by an exclusion, a coverage gap, or a payment term you didn’t expect.
At MAIF Insurance Provider, we walk Maryland drivers through this document every day. We know where the surprises hide. Here’s what to look for.
This is the first page, and it’s the most important. The declarations page is a summary of your entire policy. Everything else in the document explains the details, but the declarations page tells you what you actually bought.
Here’s what to verify:
If anything on this page is wrong, tell your agent before you sign. Fixing it later is harder.
This section explains what your MAIF policy actually pays for. It’s longer than the declarations page, but here’s the short version of what matters.
Liability coverage pays for injuries and property damage you cause to others. Maryland’s minimum is 30/60/15: $30,000 per person, $60,000 per accident, and $15,000 for property damage. If you cause an accident that costs more than those limits, you’re personally responsible for the difference.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage protects you if an uninsured or underinsured driver hits you. Maryland requires this at the same limits as your liability coverage. It’s mandatory, and it’s one of the most valuable coverages you have. About 17% of Maryland drivers are uninsured, so the odds of needing it are real.
Personal Injury Protection covers medical expenses and lost wages for you and your passengers, regardless of who caused the accident. Maryland requires at least $2,500 in PIP, but you can buy more.
Collision coverage pays to repair or replace your vehicle after an accident, regardless of fault. It’s optional, but your lender will require it if you have a car loan.
Comprehensive coverage covers non-collision damage, such as theft, fire, vandalism, weather, and animal strikes. It’s optional, but it’s worth considering in Baltimore, where vehicle theft is a real concern.
Optional add-ons include towing and labor, rental reimbursement, and roadside assistance. These aren’t required, but they can be valuable depending on how you use your car.
The coverage section also includes the “Recoupment of MAIF Assessment” language if your insurer passes that surcharge on. It’s a small percentage (0.089% of premium), and it’s not a mistake.
This is the section people skip, and it’s the section that causes the most problems.
Exclusions are the things your policy does not cover. They’re listed in plain language, but they’re often buried deep in the document. Here are the ones that matter most for MAIF policyholders:
This section explains how you pay, when you pay, and what happens if you don’t. Here’s what you need to know about MAIF payment terms:
Fees to watch for:
These fees are small individually, but they add up if you’re not careful. Set up automatic payments or mark your due dates on a calendar.
The payment section also explains what happens if you miss a payment. There’s typically a grace period, but if you miss it, your coverage can lapse. A lapse is expensive because it raises your rate, makes it harder to get standard insurance later, and can lead to fines and registration suspension.
Here’s the short checklist:
A MAIF policy document isn’t fun reading, but the four sections that matter (the declarations page, the coverage details, the exclusions, and the payment terms) are worth the time. Understanding them now prevents surprises later.
