Discover more about what to keep in mind before a car accident in Maryland.

6 Steps To Take After a Car Accident in Maryland

There are six steps to take after a car accident. Following these steps can keep you safe and make the insurance claims process smoother:

Check Yourself and Passengers

See if you or your passenger have any injuries. If you or your passenger are severely injured, do not move. Wait for emergency personnel.

Get to Safety

If you are not injured, move your vehicle into the emergency lane. Do not leave the scene. Request driver assistance if you cannot move your car. Turn off the engine, turn on the hazard lights, and use flares as needed.

Call The Police

Whether you’re in a fender bender or a more severe accident, you need to contact the police. The police will make a report that includes the date, time, and location of the accident. This report will also include the names, phone numbers, addresses, and insurance information of the parties involved. They will take statements from witnesses as needed and note damage to the vehicles. Finally, they will note any citations, law violations, and opinions on the cause or who is at fault.

Share Information

Exchange information with the other driver. Share your full name, contact information, driver’s license and plate number, insurance company, and insurance policy number. Also, share the type, model, and color of the vehicle. To speed up the process, keep your information in your glovebox: your vehicle registration, ID and health insurance cards, and emergency contacts. Avoid discussing fault at the scene.

If emergency services respond, note the officer’s name and badge number. You can also take their phone number and police report number.

Document The Accident

If you are able, take pictures of the damage to both vehicles and the license plates of the other car. Get a copy of the accident report from the police officer and request information from the other driver. You can also share pictures with your insurer so they can assess the damage.

Notify Your Insurance Company

When you report a claim, your insurance company will assess vehicle damages and injuries. Call your insurance company at the scene if possible to give them the information they need to begin the claim process. Starting this process can protect you and ensure your vehicle is fixed promptly. For more information on what you should do to report an accident, see Accident Reporting.
