How to Drive in Different Types of Inclement Weather

Follow these tips to drive safely in all types of weather, from heavy rain to high winds. If conditions become too dangerous to drive, pull over:

Ice and Snow

When you’re driving in ice and snow, it’s important to be deliberate. Break cautiously, as breaking abruptly can make you slip and slide on the road. Driving as smoothly as possible can prevent fender benders and skidding on ice.

To prevent skidding on the ice, accelerate and brake slowly. Do not use cruise control because your wheels can spin at different speeds, making it more difficult to control your car. If you feel your car skid, take your foot off the gas and brake slowly. If you do not have anti-lock brakes and need to drive downhill, lightly pump the brakes to prevent high speed.

Rain

If you’re driving during a downpour, drive slowly and avoid puddles where you can. Sometimes cars can hydroplane, which means that they slide on the surface of the road. If you do hydroplane, do not slam your brakes. Instead, pump your brakes. Steer in the direction of the skid to help your tires realign.

Make sure you have your headlights and wipers on so you can see the road and other vehicles can see you. Avoid distractions like phones until you are parked or at your destination.

High Winds

The top tip to follow when driving in high winds is to slow down. Leave more room and time to brake if you have to stop suddenly. Don’t overcorrect if the wind moves your vehicle, as you can move into another lane if you overcorrect. Watch for objects that get blown onto the road, and keep an eye out for larger vehicles. Maintain distance between your vehicle and larger vehicles like semis because they can also move into your lane if there is a big gust of wind.

Fog

When you’re driving in the fog, make sure you have your low-beam lights on; do not use high-beam lights. Do not use cruise control, even if you are on a long stretch of road.

Low visibility means you can quickly come upon another vehicle without realizing it. Be extra cautious, ensuring that you have enough room between you and the vehicle in front of you. Use windshield wipers and defrosters to ensure that you have enough visibility to see clearly through your windshield.
