Driving Tips From Your Baltimore Car Insurance Provider

Keep these tips in mind when you’re driving this spring to keep you safe and keep your car in shape:

Look Out for Wildlife

Spring means increased wildlife activity. Be particularly careful driving at night and in rural or wooded areas. Drive the speed limit and look ahead for any wildlife crossings. Do not swerve if you see an animal in the road, as you can lose control of your car.

Watch for Potholes

Changes in the weather, especially from cold to warm weather, can mean more potholes in the road. If you can’t avoid a pothole, try to slow down and release your brakes right before you hit the pothole. Releasing your brakes reduces impact and can help your car’s suspension.

Know How to Drive in the Rain

In a thunderstorm or heavy rain, you should:

  • Avoid heavy braking
  • Slow down
  • Avoid puddles or standing water
  • Maintain a safe distance
  • Use your headlights

Being careful during storms or when it’s raining can prevent problems like hydroplaning. If you find your car hydroplaning, lightly pump your brakes and turn into the angle your car is skidding. Wait until you gain traction to drive normally again. Avoid puddles and flooded roads to prevent hydroplaning and tire damage, as potholes can hide in puddles.

Watch out for Pedestrians

Better weather brings out more people. Slow down and look for pedestrians at crosswalks, especially if you’re around trails,  parks, or other busy areas. You also want to keep an eye out on the side of the road for pedestrians who aren’t crossing at crosswalks.

Check your Windshield Wipers and Wiper Fluid

If your windshield wipers make noises, leave streaks on the window, or look worn, it’s time for a replacement. To add wiper fluid, open the hood of your car and find the washer fluid reservoir. This reservoir may be white or translucent with a windshield wiper symbol on top. Remove the cap to the reservoir and gently pour in more fluid up to the fill line. Windshield wiper fluid can be important to clear your windshield of pollen, dirt, flowers, and leaves.
