If you’ve had your MAIF policy for about a year, you’re probably getting a renewal notice soon. You might be wondering what will change.
A few things may change, and most of them are good. So pay attention, because some of the changes happen automatically and some don’t. If you miss them, you could leave money on the table.
At MAIF Insurance Provider, we help Maryland drivers understand their policies from the first quote through every renewal. We know exactly what happens after year one, year two, and year three. Here’s what you need to know.

What Happens Automatically at Your First Renewal
Let’s start with the good news. One change happens automatically.
You qualify for the Continued Coverage Discount. After one full year of continuous coverage with MAIF, you become eligible for a renewal discount. It’s one of the built-in rewards for staying insured without a lapse.
This matters more than people realize. A lapse in coverage is one of the fastest ways to raise your rate in Maryland. Staying continuously insured is the single best habit you can build, and MAIF rewards it.
If you switched to MAIF from another carrier and there was any gap between your old policy ending and your new one starting, check with your agent. The discount depends on continuous coverage, and a gap can delay your eligibility.
What Changes at Year Three (And Why It’s the Big One)
Here’s the part most MAIF policyholders don’t know about.
Maryland law gives you a path out of the high-risk pool. If you’ve been covered by MAIF for three continuous years and, during that time, you haven’t had a moving violation, a chargeable accident, or more than one point assessed by the MVA, you’re entitled to continued coverage at rates reasonably comparable to what standard insurers charge.
That’s a legal entitlement, not a favor. The statute says you’re entitled to it.
So what does it mean in practice? After three clean years, you can move to standard-market rates. That’s typically a significant drop, because MAIF rates run higher than voluntary market rates by design.
But here’s the catch: it doesn’t happen automatically if you don’t ask. Your Maryland Auto Insurance Provider should be tracking this for you, but you should verify it. Ask at every renewal: “Am I close to my three-year mark? What does my record look like for that purpose?”
There’s also a small protection worth knowing about. Maryland law says MAIF can’t consider a lapse in coverage of 30 days or less when determining your eligibility for standard rates. So if you had a brief gap, it may not count against you.
The Affordability Index Phase-Out
If you live in Baltimore City or certain ZIP codes in the Baltimore area, your renewal might look different for another reason.
MAIF has used an Affordability Index to cap liability rates in certain ZIP codes, primarily in and around Baltimore. The Maryland Insurance Administration ordered MAIF to phase the index out by the end of 2027. The MIA said the index wasn’t actuarially justified and treated drivers with similar risk characteristics differently.
If you’re in one of those ZIP codes, your renewal rate could increase over the next few years as the index is phased out. MAIF testified that fully adequate rates could mean increases of 20% to 40% in some of Baltimore’s most impoverished ZIP codes.
If you live in Annapolis, Silver Spring, Frederick, or most other parts of Maryland, this particular change probably won’t affect you. If you’re in Baltimore City, ask your agent how the phase-out applies to your policy.
What to Ask at Every Renewal
Your renewal is the best time to review your policy. Here are the questions to bring to your Maryland Auto Insurance Provider:
- “Am I still getting every discount I qualify for?” The Continued Coverage Discount is automatic after year one, but safe driver discounts depend on your record, and your record changes. Ask them to check.
- “Has anything on my MVA record changed?” Points come off, violations age out. If your record has improved, your rate should reflect it. Ask them to review it.
- “Is MAIF still the right program for me?” If your record has improved enough, you might qualify for standard insurance at a lower rate. A good agent will tell you that, even though it means moving you off MAIF.
- “What’s my payment plan?” The 18% down payment and 9 monthly installments are standard, but confirm your schedule and fee structure. The $2 processing fee per transaction, $5 late fee, and $15 insufficient funds fee are worth knowing before they hit.
- “Should I pay in full this year?” The 8% pay-in-full discount is real money. If you can afford the annual premium upfront, it’s usually the cheapest option.
When You’re Ready to Leave MAIF
MAIF isn’t meant to be permanent. It’s a bridge. The whole point is to get you covered while your record improves, then move you to standard insurance when you’re ready.
So how do you know when you’re ready?
You’ve hit three clean years. That’s the legal threshold for standard-rate eligibility.
Your credit has improved. Maryland allows insurers to use credit-based insurance scores, and MAIF doesn’t. That means a private carrier might actually beat your MAIF rate once your credit is in good shape, even if your driving record is still imperfect.
Your violations have aged off. Maryland’s three-year rule limits how long most accidents and violations can affect your base rate. Once they’re off, private insurers become much more competitive.
We shop for standard insurance for our clients when they’re ready. We want to save you money, even if it means moving you off MAIF.
The Bottom Line for Maryland Drivers
Your first MAIF renewal brings the Continued Coverage Discount. Your third clean year opens the door to standard-market rates. The Affordability Index phase-out may affect your rate if you’re in a Baltimore-area ZIP code.
The key is to pay attention and ask questions. Your renewal isn’t just a bill. It’s a checkpoint.
